Central Antarctica and implications at a continental scale

چکیده
19 Under the framework of the GMOS project (Global Mercury Observation System) 20 atmospheric mercury monitoring has been implemented at Concordia Station on the high21 altitude Antarctic plateau (75°06’S, 123°20’E, 3220 m above sea level). We report here the 22 first year-round measurements of gaseous elemental mercury (Hg(0)) in the atmosphere and 23 in snowpack interstitial air on the East Antarctic ice sheet. This unique dataset shows 24 evidence of an intense oxidation of atmospheric Hg(0) in summer (24-hour daylight) due to 25 the high oxidative capacity of the Antarctic plateau atmosphere at this period of the year. 26 Summertime Hg(0) concentrations exhibited a pronounced daily cycle in ambient air with 27 maximal concentrations around midday. Photochemical reactions and chemical exchange at 28 the air/snow interface were prominent, highlighting the role of the snowpack on the 29

Diversity of nematodes in Antarctica under changing climatic conditions
2 Antarctica covers an area of about 14 million Km , more or less double the size of Australia and equal to China and India combined together. The continent broadly represents three distinct climatic regions: the sub-Antarctic, maritime and continental Antarctica with the sub-Antarctic being the most favourable and continental Antarctica is being the most hostile environments. The long-term iso...
متن کاملPetrography, Major and Trace Elemental Geochemistry of the Ordovician-Silurian Siliciclastics in North of Tabas Block, Central Iran: Implications for Provenance and Paleogeography
The upper part of Shirgesht (UPS) and lower part of Niur (LPN) formations (Ordovician-Silurian) consist of sandstone, shale and limestone, respectively. The petrography and geochemical analysis conducted to evaluate provenance of siliciclastic deposits in order to understand the paleogeography of Central Iran during the Early Paleozoic time. This study shows that quartz and K-feldspar are the m...

The Larsemann Hills range is an ice-free oasis on the Ingrid Christensen Coast of Princess Elizabeth Land, East Antarctica, which includes Bharti Island, Fisher Island, McLeod Island, Broknes Peninsula, Stornes Peninsula, and several other islands, promontories, and nunataks. The Larsemann Hills is an ice-free area of approximately 50 km2, located halfway between the Vestfold Hills a...
متن کاملAbbot Ice Shelf, structure of the Amundsen Sea continental margin and the southern boundary of the Bellingshausen Plate seaward of West Antarctica
Inversion of NASA Operation IceBridge airborne gravity over the Abbot Ice Shelf in West Antarctica for subice bathymetry defines an extensional terrain made up of east-west trending rift basins formed during the early stages of Antarctica/Zealandia rifting. Extension is minor, as rifting jumped north of Thurston Island early in the rifting process. The Amundsen Sea Embayment continental shelf w...
متن کاملBenthic Marine Habitats in Antarctica
Benthic habitats in Antarctica differ from those in other parts of the world in several important characterislies. Most of the Southern Ocean overlies the abyssal plain, where the sediments are primarily siliceous. Icc-rafted debris provides isolated patches of hard substratum but otherwise little is known of the biology of the deep-sea in Antarctica. Shallow WOller habitats are heavily influen...
